We can’t think of a more eventful trip than the 3 day, best/worst road trip to Alamogordo, NM. We call this the best/worst trip because the events that took place were both awesome and terrible. A total of nine people in a 15 passenger van and all the gear needed to camp in the mountains of New Mexico. We had it all planned out, we would do all of the things!
First on the itinerary: Carlsbad Caverns National Park. After a 4 hour detour we finally arrive, only to find out the flooding that had sent us on that 4 hour detour had washed out the road to Carlsbad. The Caverns were closed, it was a sad day! We had no choice but to continue on our way to our campsite in Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. We arrived in the dark of night and found a rattlesnake had claimed our campsite before we could. After screams of terror, we decided to co-exist with the snake, we set up our tents, started a fire, and watched the stars before retiring for the night. That night, a stomach virus claimed it’s first victim, Judy!
The morning revealed a beautiful view of the mountain. Once we cooked a hearty breakfast we set out to White Sands National Monument. We had the most amazing time on the dunes and captured the most amazing photos in our wedding garb. Hannah was next in line to get the stomach pains.
That evening we saw the glowing hot air balloons and woke up at 5am to watch the balloon invitational. It was the coolest thing seeing the balloons float up into the sky. It was the perfect way to end the road trip. As we started our journey home the virus had to claim one more person, me.
It was the best time, even though there was a lot of vomiting involved. A true adventure, the perfect trip to start this blog out right!
